Full name: Brian Edney Heard; Edney was my grandmother’s maiden name. I was born at Sister Bridie’s Hospital, opposite the police station; I was very premature and I only weighed two pounds something. My mum was very ill, but they sent her home before me, then my grandmother brought me home from hospital in a shoe box, because I was a tiny wee fellow and she thought I’d die if I stayed at the hospital. She wrapped me up in olive oil and cotton wool and kept me on the hob of the stove and fed me curds from junket for the first three months.
